Mary Helen Owen, 73, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, May 28, 2017, due to complications of dementia.

Mrs. Owen was born February 3, 1944 in Rogersville, TN to the late Walter C. and Jessie Gilmore. The seventh of nine children, Mrs. Owen grew up in Harriman, TN where she and her family were very involved in the First Christian Church. She also sang with the “Dixie Dollins” a girls’ barbershop quartet, which performed in the greater Knoxville, TN area.

Mrs. Owen was an alumnus of Johnson University (formerly Johnson Bible College) in Knoxville, TN, where she performed with the college choir. While in college, she fell in love with Eddie Owen. They were married on December 22, 1963. Aside from being a wonderful wife and mother, Mrs. Owen was an accomplished writer of both poetry and prose as well as a gifted seamstress and still life artist. She was a longtime member of the First Christian Church in Bartow, FL as well as the Bartow Art Guild.

Mrs. Owen is survived by her beloved husband, Rev. Eddie W. Owen; sons, Eddie Owen, Jr., and wife, Jane, Hamilton Owen and his wife, Julie and Patrick Owen; grandsons, Cameron, Drew and Lucas; granddaughter, Jillian; sisters, Charlotte Gilmore, Dorothy “Dot” Gilmore and her companion, J.D., and Betty Sanders and her husband, Mike; brother, Roy Gilmore and his wife, Ruth; and many other loving family members and devoted friends.
