1930 - 2020

Indianapolis - Al Baxter, Sr., 90, passed away Wednesday, November 18, 2020. He was born September 7, 1930 in Little Rock, AR to the late Florence Brown and Albert Gilliam. He was a graduate of Children’s High School in Wynne, AR.

Al was an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army where he served in the Korean War. He married Vesta Hinton in 1951. The couple moved to Battle Creek, MI that same year and then to Indianapolis, IN in 1953. Al and Vesta were married for 17 years. They had 8 children, 7 boys and 1 girl. Al worked for Union Carbine for 35 years. After retirement, he learned welding and used his talents to fabricate safes, security doors and many other useful items.

Al was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Vesta; children: Mark, Al Jr., Jacqueline and Melvin Baxter; 2 brothers; 3 sisters; grandson, Terry Jones, Sr.; granddaughter, Leslie Baxter; and great grandson, Daniel Baxter. Left to cherish his precious memory are his sons: Stephen Baxter, Hosea Baxter and his wife, Karen, Jeffery Baxter and William Baxter; brothers, Michael Gilliam and his wife, Lena, of Benton, AR and Doyle Gilliam of Jacksonville, AR; sisters: Joann Gilliam, Vivian Gilliam and Allison Gilliam, all of Lansing ,MI, Mary Waller and Vicki Wilson of North Little Rock, AR and Barbara Gilliam of Little Rock, AR; 16 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 13 great-great grandchildren; and many other beloved family members and dear friends. Al Baxter, Sr. was blessed to see 4 generations before being called home. He will be greatly missed by all who loved, admired and adored him.

Al’s family will receive friends Tuesday, November 24, 2020, from 3 – 7 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 925 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46227. For the health and safety of all guests attending, face masks are required. Thank you.
