Katherine Shockley
1930 - 2020

Indianapolis - Mary Katherine Shockley, 89, passed away Thursday, March 5, 2020. She was born March 24, 1930 in Bowling Green, KY to Joseph Luther and Susie Ann (Jones) Martin. Katherine was a homemaker and worked hard to provide for the care of her family. She loved working in her garden and with her flowers. Additionally, she loved sewing, going to yard sales and doing word searches, but more than anything else, she enjoyed visiting with her family and friends.

Katherine married Leroy Shockley in Glasgow, Kentucky on June 15, 1946 and they shared nearly 72 years of marriage before Leroy’s death on May 27, 2018. In the late 1950s, Leroy and Katherine heard the broadcast coming from the Abundant Life Memorial Church which was then meeting at 13th and Alabama Street. They visited the church and soon both of them received Christ as their Savior and began to serve Him. Leroy and Katherine used their car for the Lord’s service, making church calls and providing transportation to church for many who had no other way to get there. Katherine loved serving in the church nursery. Over a period of many years, it was her great joy to help care for literally hundreds of babies. In later years, they also attended the Eastside Full Gospel Church and the East Rawles Church of God.

Katherine was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Leroy Shockley; parents, Joseph Luther and Susie Ann (Jones) Martin; and brothers, Herschel Jones and Joseph Luther Martin, Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Linda Dewlen and her husband, Tom; sons, David Shockley and his wife, Laura and Michael Shockley; sister, Virginia Martin Kountz; grandchildren, Rick Shockley and his wife, Shaquana, Steven Shockley and Laura Quirindongo and her husband, Josué; great-grandchildren: Ricky Shockley, Ely Shockley, Lauren Shockley and Nayeli Quirindongo-Dewlen; and many other loving family members and dear friends.

Katherine’s family will receive friends Tuesday, March 10, 2020, from 4 – 8 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 925 East Hanna Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46227. A celebration of her life will be conducted Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 11 am at the funeral home. A committal service will be follow at Concordia Cemetery.
