Dale A Smith

Dale Allen Smith, 76, passed away April 20, 2026 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Dale was born on June 21, 1949 in Almont, Michigan to Ralph M. and Zola (Weyer) Smith. Dale grew up in Imlay City, Michigan and graduated from Imlay City High School in 1967. While in school he enjoyed many years as a Boy Scout. He often said that his biggest Scout adventure was attending Philmont National Scout Camp in New Mexico while in high school. He also earned the God and Country Award while in Scouts.

After graduation he went on to attend Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Michigan and Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in 1971.

Dale proudly served in the Army Reserves in Ann Arbor, MI and in the National Guard in Bloomington, Indiana 1971-1977 and reached the rank of Army Specialist E-4.

After college he worked at WWJ-TV in Detroit and then moved to Bloomington, Indiana to work for Sarkes Tarzian designing television broadcast equipment. In 1975 he moved to Greenwood, Indiana and worked at television station WTTV in Indianapolis for many years as a broadcast engineer.

Dale was a gifted musician and played the piano, cornet and bass guitar. While in high school and again after he retired he was in small bands with friends to enjoy playing their favorite songs and entertaining friends.

While his sons were growing up he volunteered with their Scout troop and often camped and hiked with them. Dale liked to travel especially in the US with his family and over the years had travelled in most states and Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, Canada as well as Central America.

Dale is survived by his sons Sean C. Smith of Indianapolis; Adam J. Smith (Wendy) of Indianapolis; his former spouse Susanne (Herr) Smith of Brownsburg, IN; grandchildren Kezaiah Smith, Makaila Smith, Farrin Smith and Shelby Smith. He is also survived by his sister Carolyn Sue Pearson of Northville, MI and his brother, Brian R. Smith of Naperville, IL and niece Michelle (Chris) Costa of Hartland, MI.

There will be a Memorial Gathering Wednesday, April 29, 2026 4:00-6:00 pm., at Newcomer Funeral Home, 925 E. Hanna Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46227.
