Edward Kenninger, 93, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully at home on May 16, 2025.
Born on October 20, 1931, he was the son of Edward and Harriet Kenninger, who owned a greenhouse business on the south side of Indianapolis. As a child, he was affectionately called “Sonny,” and from an early age he learned the value of hard work and service.
Ed served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and, upon returning home, married Donna Rae Peek on December 21, 1956. They were devoted partners for 69 years. Donna survives.
He is also survived by his children: David (Judy) Kenninger, Dan (Pam) Kenninger, and Lisa (Brad) Fischer; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dorothy Tegeler.
Ed had a long career at Indianapolis Power & Light. While employed full-time, he earned an associate's degree from Purdue University—a reflection of his perseverance and commitment to personal growth.
After retiring from IPL, Ed drove a school bus for 22 years, serving students with special needs.
Faith played a central role in Ed’s life. He was an active member and volunteer at Southport Presbyterian Church. He also volunteered with St. Francis Hospital and participated in international construction missions, including several trips to Tenwek Hospital in Kenya, where his work left a lasting impact.
Ed and Donna shared a deep love of travel and adventure. Together, they explored the world and had the rare joy of visiting every continent—collecting memories, deepening their faith, and expanding their understanding of the world.
Ed will be remembered for his steady kindness, humble service, deep faith, and love for his family. He lived a life marked by purpose and quiet generosity.
Visitation will be held at Southport Presbyterian Church on Friday, May 30, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., with a memorial service to follow at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Mission Fund at Southport Presbyterian Church, 7525 McFarland Blvd., Indianapolis, IN 46237 or Friends of Tenwek, 1132 Greenbridge Dr., Matthews, NC 28105.
