A Life in Motion and Music
• Early Roots & Travels: Born in Sharon, Pennsylvania, Elaine’s early life was a journey across the map, growing up in Brooklyn, New York; Bluffton, Ohio; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Atlanta, Georgia; and Angola, Indiana.
• High School Sweethearts: On June 15, 1963, she married her high school sweetheart, John Weiss, beginning a devoted 63-year partnership defined by shared adventures and deep mutual love. They had three children, Douglas, Shelley, and Caroline.
• Teaching & The Arts: In Lombard, Illinois, she spent 15 years teaching flute and piano and directing her church's children's choir. At her children’s elementary school, she joyfully served as the "picture lady," opening young eyes to masterworks of art and teaching kids how to look closely and think deeply.
• Choral Devotion: Music was her lifelong language. She sang in numerous church choirs and achieved the honor of a 20-year tenure as a member of the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir.
Entrepreneur, Athlete, and Matriarch
• Big Boulder Golf Course: From 1985 to 1999, Elaine and John owned and operated Big Boulder Golf Course in Milford, Indiana, running a community hub with the same hard work and care they applied everywhere else.
• Athletic Drive: An avid runner, walker, and skier, Elaine tackled several 10K races and the elite Indianapolis Half Marathon (Mini-Marathon) with the exact determination she brought to every other pursuit. She was also a talented handcrafter who excelled at sewing, knitting, crochet, and needlepoint.
• Family Pillar: Beginning in 1999, she poured her heart into the next great chapter of her life: helping raise and guide her grandchildren, ensuring she remained a steady, loving anchor in their lives.
Survivors and Legacy
Elaine is survived by her devoted husband, John Weiss; her children, Douglas (Margaret), Shelley (Constantine), and Caroline (Paul); and her beloved grandchildren, Ella, Alex, Oskar, and Molly.
She taught her children and grandchildren independence, manners, a profound appreciation for culture, and the practical graces of everyday living. Elaine believed that anything worth doing was worth doing well, that children always had hidden depths waiting to be unlocked, and that a truly full life must be lived with endless energy, sharp curiosity, and deep purpose.
