Eugene "Gene" Kestner, born on September 13, 1941, in Nashville, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was a loving husband, dedicated father, cherished grandfather, and great-grandfather, who will be remembered for his generous spirit and unwavering kindness.
Gene proudly began his career at Amtrak as a pipe fitter, dedicating 25 years of service before retiring. Known as a jack of all trades, he had a wealth of practical skills that allowed him to tackle any challenge that came his way. His hands-on approach and problem-solving abilities made him a valued colleague and a source of help to those around him.
Outside of work, Gene was an avid fan of NASCAR, holding a special admiration for the legendary Dale Earnhardt. He also enjoyed following the Indiana Pacers, further showcasing his love for sports. His interest in antique cars was particularly exemplified in his proud accomplishment of rebuilding a 1955 Chevy, lovingly nicknamed "Peaches and Cream." Gene's affinity for country music was clear, with George Jones holding a special place in his heart, as he often filled his home with the sounds of classic tunes.
Gene's loving nature shone brightly in his family life. He was a devoted husband of 49 years to Cecilia Kestner, and together they built a life filled with love and support. He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Toole and Tamara (Ernie) Johnson, who carry forward the values he instilled in them. Gene was a proud grandfather to Marvin Adkins, Casandra Adkins, Brandon (Tracy) Johnson, and Miranda Johnson, and a great-grandfather to Makenzie Johnson. His grandchildren were the pride of his life, and he found great joy in watching them grow and thrive. Gene is also survived by his siblings, Alberta, Henry, Dolly, Patsy, Mary Jane, and David.
Gene was preceded in death by his son, Eugene Kestner Jr., along with his parents, Elizabeth Kestner and Claude Kestner; and his siblings, Claude Jr., Bobby, Helen, Tommy, and Charles. Though he has departed from this world, the memories he created and the impact he made on those who loved him will remain forever cherished.
Eugene Kestner will be deeply missed, but his spirit and legacy of kindness will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know him.
