With deep sorrow and profound respect, we announce the passing of Evalyn Ruth Balay, affectionately known to many as "Evie," who departed this life on May 1, 2026, in her beloved hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on October 17, 1964, also in Indianapolis, Evie lived a life marked by resilience, love, and unwavering determination.
Evie was a woman whose strength was palpable—the strongest you’d ever meet. She faced life's challenges with a steadfast heart and a resolute spirit, coupled with a loving and caring nature that touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. Honest to a fault, Evie was known for her blunt and straightforward manner, a trait that exemplified her authenticity and deep sincerity.
Her professional journey was one of dedication and adaptability, having worked eighteen years at Burger King, five years at Wendy's, five years at Penn Station, and eight years at Taco Bell. Throughout these eighteen-plus years in the food service industry, she left an indelible mark as a dependable and hardworking individual.
Beyond her career, Evie found joy and solace in her creative pursuits. She was passionate about Diamond Art, crafting her own jewelry, and crocheting—hobbies that echoed her nurturing spirit and eye for detail. Evie delighted in spending quality time with her grandson, sharing cherished moments that brought tremendous happiness. She was also an avid fan of television series such as Criminal Minds, CSI, NCIS, Law and Order, SWAT, and a myriad of true crime shows, appreciating stories that perhaps mirrored her own sharp intellect.
Among her proudest accomplishments were her daughters and grandchildren; her family was her greatest treasure and the source of endless pride. Evie's loving family includes her mother, Evalyn McCutcheon; her sister, Kathy McCutcheon; her brother, James McCutcheon Jr.; her daughters, Star McCutcheon and Alex McCutcheon; and six grandchildren who carry forward her legacy. Additionally, she was blessed with the companionship of Angela Day, affectionately known as her “sister from another mister,” a bond treasured dearly.
Evie was preceded in death by her father, James McCutcheon Sr., her fiancé, Vince Brown, and her granddaughter, Lilly Hall, all of whom hold cherished places in her heart and memory.
Friends, family, and all who knew Evalyn Ruth Balay are invited to honor her life and memory at the Newcomer Funeral Home located at 925 E Hanna Ave, Indianapolis, Indiana 46227. Visitation will be held on May 9, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., followed immediately by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m.
As we remember Evie, we celebrate a woman whose strength and love left an indelible imprint on our hearts. Her steadfast spirit, her caring nature, and her unwavering honesty will continue to inspire all who were privileged to know her. Though she has gone from our side, her legacy endures in the family she so loved and the lives she so deeply touched. May she rest in peace.
