Jewel D. Herring, 69, of Indianapolis, passed away on August 19, 2025.
Jewel was born in Indianapolis on March 2, 1956, to William T. and June (Belcher) Herring. She worked for many years at a plant nursery, a job she truly enjoyed. Her green thumb and love of being outdoors made it a natural fit.
Outside of work, Jewel filled her days with the things she loved most. She enjoyed word puzzles that kept her sharp, and she could spend hours lost in a good movie. Disney films were always her favorite, and she was beyond excited when her granddaughter introduced her to Disney+, because suddenly all her beloved movies were right there in one place. Music was also a constant in her life, especially oldies that brought back memories and lifted her spirits.
Above all, Jewel treasured her family, especially her grandchildren. They were the light of her life, and she adored every moment spent with them—whether they were playing together, sharing stories, or simply enjoying each other’s company. She was very loving, she was also tough as nails, and everyone knew if they needed someone to have their back, Jewel was the one.
Jewel is survived by her longtime companion, Otis Stidham; her former husband, Jimmy Bernard; her daughter, Amy Bernard; her son, James Bernard; her siblings, Rodger Herring, Margaret Davis, Martha Lair, Kathy Liggett, and Ronnie Herring; and her grandchildren, Kaylynn Bernard, Kaylee Bernard, Nick Lamb, Charlie Swafford, Emily Bernard, Alyssa Bernard, Chase Cunningham, and Chance Bernard. She also leaves behind great-grandchildren Maylynn Boyce, Carla Bernard, Brian Boyce Jr., Zoey Bernard, and Waylynn Landis.
She was preceded in passing by her parents, William T. and June Herring; her brother, Garland Herring; her sister, Shirley Cochran; and her great-granddaughter, Braylynn Boyce.
She will be greatly missed.
