Joann Deem, a beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2025, in her hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana. Born on February 25, 1956, Joann grew up to be a cherished member of her community, graduating from Arsenal Technical High School in 1974.
Throughout her life, Joann found immense joy in her role as a grandmother. She adored spending time with her grandchildren, Saffyre Gunn, A'Royale Perkins, Lory'ale Perkins, Chaz "Bubby" Perkins, Jr., and Aryi'ale Deem, whose laughter and energy brought her great happiness. Joann's love for her family extended beyond the immediate, as she created lasting memories with her daughter, Alexandra Deem. She is also survived by her siblings: James "Jimmy" Deem and Carol Kirby. Her nieces, Michelle Kirby, Debbie Pedigo, and Stephanie Minch also held a special place in her heart, along with her great nieces: Tiffany Phelps, Larissa Deem and Danielle Minch.
Joann's life was enriched by profound experiences and interests that brought her joy. She loved her solitude, often embracing the quiet peace it offered. Joann cherished watching movies and television shows, allowing herself to be enveloped in different narratives and stories. She also had a playful side, relishing in moments of silliness that brightened her days. Cooking, reading, gardening, and playing cards were among the many hobbies that added joy to her life, alongside her inclination for playing games on her phone and spending time outside.
Joann's proudest accomplishments included her devotion to raising dogs, particularly German Shepherds, a reflection of her nurturing spirit and love for animals. She built a life rich in love and laughter, ensuring that those around her felt valued and cherished.
Joann was preceded in death by her parents, Elsie Toshlog and Lloyd Deem, as well as her brothers Robert "Bobby" Deem, Kenny Deem, and Chuck Deem, her sister Eloise Pedigo, and her nephews David Pedigo and Bill Pedigo and many beloved pets. Their memory lived on in her heart, impacting her life in ways that were profound and lasting.
A dear friend to many, Joann's best friend, Jodi Genkel, was a significant part of her journey, sharing countless moments filled with camaraderie and support.
As we remember Joann, we celebrate a life dedicated to love, family, and the special moments that make life so rich. Her spirit will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts.
