John Ray Ditchley, a dedicated father, loving grandfather, and cherished member of his community, passed away on April 24, 2025, in Indianapolis. He was born December 25, 1958. He is remembered for his warm spirit, unwavering commitment to his family, and his unique nickname, "Cat Man," earned through his deep affection for cats.
A proud graduate of Emmerich Manual High School, class of 1975, John went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Army, where he fulfilled the crucial role of military police. His military service instilled in him a sense of duty and discipline that he carried throughout his life.
John's family provided him great joy and pride. He is survived by his daughters, April Gill and her husband, Jason, and Rachael Ditchley along with her significant other, Dave. John held a special place in the hearts of his mother, Thelma Shaw Ditchley, and his siblings: Karen Grubbs and her husband, Mike; Tammie Sue Harris and her husband, Robert; Mary Ann Winters and her husband, Gary; Stacy Allen and her husband, Randy; and Tim Ditchley and his wife, Sheila. His grandchildren—Chad Gill, Isaiah Staten, Hannah Staten, Madyson Gill, Angel Dycus, Carson Gill, Emily Thomas, Sierra Gill, and Christopher Gill—brought immense happiness to his life. He also celebrated the arrival of a great granddaughter, Sophia Gill.
In addition to his family ties, John was passionate about collecting coins and was known for his dedication to his church, notably in assisting the youth group. His commitment to nurturing the next generation exemplified his caring nature and desire to give back to the community.
While John Ray Ditchley leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness, he is preceded in death by his father, William "Bud" Ditchley, as well as his grandson, Elijah Ditchley, and granddaughter, Megan Gill.
A visitation will be held to honor John's memory on May 9, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by a funeral service from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, located at 925 E Hanna Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46227.
John will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege to know him, and his spirit will continue to live on through his family and the countless lives he touched.
