Johnny Sells Jr. was born on October 26, 1960, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and passed away peacefully on May 23, 2025, at IU Health West Hospital in Avon, Indiana. He was a beloved son, father, brother, and friend, whose hard work and unwavering spirit earned him a special place in the hearts of all who knew him.
A proud veteran, Johnny served in the Army National Guard, a testament to his commitment to serving others. He attended Speedway High School and worked diligently throughout his life as a laborer in the construction industry, where he was known for his strong work ethic and an indomitable spirit. A hardheaded individual with a charming smile, Johnny exemplified the traits of a man dedicated to providing for his family and his community.
Johnny cherished the simple pleasures of life. He delighted in watching family favorites like Andy Griffith and MASH, creating treasured memories that brought laughter and joy into their home. An avid football fan, he particularly admired Peyton Manning, relishing the excitement of each game as he spent precious moments with his children and grandchildren.
Johnny's interests extended far and wide. He had a fondness for camping, cleaning cars, and mowing grass, finding joy in these activities while surrounded by his loved ones. He was known for his delightful sweet tooth, as well as a penchant for savoring beer, chicken wings, and oatmeal – little indulgences that made his days brighter.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his mother, Melva Rose Penn-Sells; his son, Johnny Sells; his daughters, Ashley and Tabbetha Sells; his sister, Tammy Sells; and brothers, Mark and David Sells. Additionally, he is survived by a host of adoring aunts and uncles: Janie Penn Taylor, Paula Penn Reynolds, Callie Penn, and Michelle Penn Hale, along with his cherished grandchildren, Johnny, Raquel, Xavier, Emerald, and Dylan. Johnny was preceded in death by his grandfather, Warren Calvin Penn; grandmother, Mary Jane Tittle Penn; father, Johnny Sells Sr.; and stepson, Jason Scott Nibarger.
While he leaves behind a legacy of fond memories and an unyielding spirit, Johnny will be profoundly missed by all those whose lives he touched. He was a man who would give you the shirt off his back, always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need.
