Jonathan Edward Wenzlaff, a devoted family man, cherished community member, and passionate bus driver, passed away on August 5, 2025, in Indianapolis, Indiana, at the age of 54. Born on June 3, 1971, in Springfield, Missouri, Jonathan was known for his joyful spirit, caring nature, and unwavering commitment to those around him.
For 28 years, Jonathan served as a bus driver for Perry Township, where his smile and jovial demeanor made the daily commute a pleasure for countless children and families. His passion for ministry was evident in his dedication to connecting with others — he was a prayer warrior and made it a point to keep in touch with friends and family regularly. Jonathan touched many lives through his genuine care and kindness, earning the admiration and affection of all who had the privilege to know him.
Jonathan and his wife, Ann, shared a deep passion for service, which drove them to establish a homeless ministry named WAFER. For 13 years, they devoted themselves to preparing hot meals weekly and providing clothing to those in need in Indy downtown areas, where they also offered spiritual support. This profound commitment to their community summarized Jonathan’s character, reflecting a spirit of generosity and love that touched many lives.
Prior to his impactful career in transportation, Jonathan honored his commitment to his country by serving in the United States Navy from 1989 to 1992. He bravely served on the USS JFK Aircraft Carrier CV-67 during Operation Desert Storm and remained in inactive reserves until 1997. His service encapsulated his dedication not only to his family but also to his nation.
Jonathan’s passions extended beyond his career and military service; he enjoyed a deep fascination with school busses and cars, often sharing this enthusiasm with those close to him.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Wenzlaff; mother, Gloria Wenzlaff; sister, Susan Gonzalez; brother, Michael (Regina) Wenzlaff; nephew, Mike Wenzlaff Jr.; daughters, Stephanie (John) Travis and Peggy (Nate) Grow; son, Steven Black II; step-son, Brian (Raven) Alford; and a host of grandchildren, including Shalyn (Evan) Vonderheide, Kristin (Jared Allen) Travis, Gabriel (Hannah) Grow, Nicholas Travis, Emma Grow, Lydia Grow, and Marissa Travis. He is also survived by two dear great-granddaughters, Eleanor Grow and Teagan Grow.
Jonathan is preceded in death by his father, Roger Wenzlaff, whose memory will continue to live on through the hearts of those who loved him.
A visitation will take place on August 10, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home, located at 925 E Hanna Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46227. Additional visitation is scheduled for August 11, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, followed by a funeral service at Faith Assembly Church, located at 186 Royal Rd, Beech Grove, IN 46107, starting at 11:00 AM.
Jonathan Edward Wenzlaff will be remembered as a happy, caring, and family-oriented individual, whose legacy of love and community service will continue to inspire all who knew him. He will be dearly missed.
