Katherine Arritt, known affectionately to many as "Mama Katie," passed away on April 28, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering determination, profound care, and enduring love. Born on November 10, 1960, Katherine’s journey in this world was marked by her unyielding spirit and steadfast commitment to those she held dear.
Katherine’s proudest accomplishment was earning her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Indianapolis—a feat she achieved at the age of 47—while simultaneously embracing the challenging and rewarding role of motherhood. Her determination to better herself was not just a personal triumph but an inspiring testament to the power of perseverance and hard work.
Her career at Manuel High School was nothing short of impactful. For many years, Katherine shaped the lives of countless children. She was more than an administrator; she was a guiding light, a nurturing soul, and a formidable advocate who never shied away from standing firm for the students. Her stubbornness, combined with her caring nature, made her a Mother Hen to many—a protector who always worried but never judged. “You approved of that,” she would say, reflecting her unique blend of sass and acceptance, always ready to help others and never turning away from a good deal.
Katherine lived a life full of memorable adventures. She traveled to the Bahamas and Nashville, Tennessee, sharing these joyous experiences with her beloved sister, Lyndella Kuehni, and partaking in girls’ trips that strengthened bonds and created lasting memories. Her enthusiasm for life was also expressed through her hobbies and interests: she loved listening to Alan Jackson, devoted time to caring for her cherished dogs, enjoyed shopping excursions, and was deeply ingrained in her church community. Crossword puzzles and romance novels provided her with intellectual stimulation and quiet moments of pleasure.
A proud supporter of the military and veterans, Katherine’s respect for service and sacrifice was unwavering, extending the depth of her character beyond personal circles to a broader community.
She is survived by a family who carried her spirit forward. Her significant other of 30 years, Darren Langdon, stood by her side through every chapter. Her loving children, Dustin (Gigi), Sherry (Scotty Sr), and Heather, continue to carry forward the values she instilled. Her sister, Lyndella Kuehni (Joerg), shares the memories of their many adventures, the laughter, and the unbreakable bond only siblings know. Alongside them are her beloved dogs, extended family members, and friends who will forever be touched by her compassionate and determined soul.
Katherine was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence Eugene Schakel and Donna Marie Starling, who undoubtedly helped shape the foundation of strength and love upon which she built her extraordinary life.
Though Katherine’s physical presence is no longer with us, it must be acknowledged with determined pride: she is no longer in pain. Her spirit is now at peace, released from earthly struggles yet forever entrenched in the lives, hearts, and memories of all who knew her. Her legacy is one of perseverance, love, and unwavering resolve. She taught us how to fight, how to care fiercely, and most importantly, how to live with purpose and heart.
In remembering Katherine “Mama Katie” Arritt, let us embrace the determined spirit she embodied. Let us carry her kindness, her sassy resilience, and her motherly worries forward. She is gone—but her impact remains unshakable. Her story is one we honor—not just today, but every day hereafter.
