Listen to Obituary

We celebrate the life of Mary Louise (Stephens) Smith who passed at the age of 72 on May 13, 2026, in Indianapolis, IN. Mary went peacefully at Community Hospital South with her husband Jim and daughter Amy, and son Gregory.

Mary was born in Frankfort, Indiana, and is the daughter of William and Anna Claire Stephens. She often spoke very fondly of her early days growing up in Chesterfield. It was a very small town, and everyone knew each other. Her Dad was a Pharmacist and her Mom was the town clerk treasurer. Mary and her brother John and sisters Susan and Lynn enjoyed the Mayberry atmosphere of a small town, visiting neighbors, playing baseball, camping with the family.

A few years later, they moved to the city of Southport, near Indianapolis. Mary attended Southport High School where she graduated in 1972. Mary spent her early years working in bank operations both at Indiana National Bank and Merchants National Bank. Mary met her husband Jim of 50 years while working the evening shift at Merchants National Bank. They were married on February 28, 1976. Mary and Jim lived in Indianapolis during most of their marriage with a five-year excursion to Germany working with the military banking operation in that country. After Mary and Jim’s return from overseas, Mary eventually worked in real estate with the F. C. Tucker Company.

Mary is preceded in death by her brother, John. She is survived by her husband, Jim, daughter Amy Kuchaes, son Gregory and her beloved granddaughter Mia Christine Kuchaes, and two sisters, Susan (Paul) Caszatt and Lynn (Jan) Urbanek. Mary will be interred at Concordia Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana where family and friends are invited to visit.
