Michael "Mike" Wayne Smith, born on December 15, 1956, in Franklin, Indiana, to Jack and Marie Smith, left this world on August 20, 2024, in Greenwood, Indiana, after bravely battling pancreatic cancer for 13 months. He was a beloved figure whose life was characterized by his dedication to family, community, and his craft.
Mike embarked on his professional journey upon graduating from Beech Grove High School in 1975, followed by his enrollment in Pastry School in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he earned his Master Baker certificate. For over 30 years, he was the proud owner of Smitty's Bakery, where he nurtured the art of baking and created countless memories for those who frequented his establishment. After selling Smitty's, he continued his bakery career, managing the Costco Bakery from 2008 (at Michigan Road until 2015 and County Line Road) until his passing.
Throughout his life, Mike embraced a myriad of interests—from electronic trends and stock market strategies to horse racing and the thrill of the Kentucky Derby. He was a music and history enthusiast, with a genuine curiosity that made him a witty conversationalist and an intelligent presence in any gathering. A handyman and jack of all trades, he took pride in his ability to tackle any task that came his way.
Mike's family life was rich with love and laughter, especially during cherished family vacations and while watching his granddaughters, Audrey and McKenna Lloyd, play sports. He found immense joy in training others, imparting wisdom and skills to those around him, and fostering a sense of community wherever he went.
On August 14, 1977, Mike married Sheila (Ground) Smith in a ceremony at the Good Shepherd United Methodist Church in Indianapolis, Indiana. Their union became a cornerstone of his life, reflecting his commitment to family values and deep love for his wife.
Mike is survived by his children, Lindsay Smith and Natalie (Jason) Lloyd; his siblings, Diane Kelley and James Smith; and his grandchildren, Audrey Lloyd and McKenna Lloyd. He leaves behind a legacy of strength, humor, and unwavering dedication to his family and profession.
A graveside service to honor Mike’s life will be held on August 22, 2024, at Round Hill Cemetery in Indianapolis, Indiana, beginning at 12:30 PM. Family and friends are invited to share in this moment of remembrance, celebrating the impact he made in their lives and the love he spread throughout his years.
