Robert Hawkins, 83, of Indianapolis, passed away on Monday, November 10, 2025. He was born on April 27, 1942, in Beech Grove, Indiana, to the late Lewis and Lillian Irene (Coomer) Hawkins.
Robert lived a full and active life centered around faith, family, and a lifelong love of sports. A devoted member of First Baptist Church, he attended faithfully for his entire life, finding both strength and community within his church family. His faith was a cornerstone of who he was: steady, humble, and strong.
From a young age, Robert had a deep passion for sports. At just 18, he began umpiring and went on to officiate countless games over the years—football, basketball, softball, volleyball—you name it, he called it. He took great pride in the work and in supporting local athletes. Even after retiring from the field, he remained one of the biggest fans in the stands, especially when it came to watching his grandchildren play. He never missed a game if he could help it; and if he couldn’t be there in person, he always figured out how to stream the games on TV so he could still cheer them on. He was endlessly proud of each and every one of them.
Robert also loved being on the move. Whether it was fishing, traveling with his family, or admiring an old hot rod, he found joy in the simple pleasures of life; he loved sports, the open road, and a good adventure; especially when it meant spending time with the people he loved most.
He had a strong work ethic and took great pride in providing for his family. His hard work ensured that they could enjoy nice vacations together; moments that became some of their most beloved memories.
Family was at the heart of everything Robert did. He was a devoted husband to his late wife, Sharon Hawkins, and a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his pride and joy; he loved them to the moon and back. His steady presence, kind heart, and strong example of faith will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
Robert is survived by his children Patty (Roger), Robin, and Bobby; grandchildren Jason, Joey, Josh, Amanda, Nathan, and Amber; and great-grandchildren Mercedes, Luke, Michael, Gavin, Vincent, Astrid, Logan, Melody, and Montana. He was preceded in passing by his parents, his wife Sharon, and his brothers Don and Bill Hawkins.
Robert’s life was one of quiet strength, faith, and devotion—to God, to his family, and to the game.
