Sara Jane Schmittle-Buettner, age 80, a resident of Indianapolis, was born in Claysburg, Pennsylvania, and went to heaven on January 1, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.
Sara was the beloved daughter of George A. Schmittle Jr. and Hyla McKinney Schmittle, who preceded her in death. She graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in 1963 and went on to build a life centered on family, dedication, and care for others.
On February 25, 1968, Sara married the love of her life, John F. Buettner Sr., in Baltimore, Maryland. Together they shared many years of marriage and family life.
Sara worked as a bookkeeper for many years before retiring in 2003. Known for her strong work ethic and attention to detail, she approached her career with the same commitment she gave to every aspect of her life.
She is survived by her loving husband, John F. Buettner Sr.; her children, Chrisy Mullins (Larry) and John F. Buettner Jr.; her brothers, George Schmittle (Karen) and Hugh Schmittle (Lisa); her cherished grandchildren, Garrett Mullins (Karie) and Jonathan Mullins (Elizabeth); her adored great-grandchildren, Hailey, Keagan, Simon, and Liam; her devoted niece, Jackie Hamilton, whose compassionate and selfless end-of-life care was an extraordinary gift to Sara and her family; and her beloved 12-year-old Morkie, Phoebe, whom she loved like one of her own children.
At a very young age, Sara demonstrated remarkable talent. She was a world-ranked baton and fire baton twirler, earning recognition in the Who’s Who book by the age of eight—an achievement that reflected her discipline, skill, and determination. In addition to her twirling accomplishments, Sara could play a beautiful rendition of Moonlight Sonata and was also a gifted dancer, expressing her creativity and love of the arts in many forms.
Above all else, Sara adored her grandchildren and loved her family with unconditional devotion. She was known for her generosity, kindness, and willingness to give anyone the shirt off her back. She also had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh, bringing light, warmth, and joy to those around her.
In her quiet moments, Sara enjoyed watching crime shows, reading, and taking care of everyone around her. She also loved her Game Boy and could often be found playing it, a pastime that brought her joy and a bit of fun into her everyday life. Her warmth, selflessness, and unwavering love will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
