Steven Tillman Freels, affectionately known as Steve, was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on February 11, 1952. He embarked on his journey through life with kindness and generosity, traits that would define him as a husband, father, son, brother, and cherished friend. Steve passed away peacefully on May 26, 2025, in the city of his birth, leaving behind a legacy deeply rooted in love and family.
A proud graduate of Manual High School, Steve built a fulfilling career as a truck driver. His commitment to his work demonstrated his strong work ethic and passion for life on the road. Beyond his profession, Steve enjoyed a variety of hobbies that brought him joy and comfort, including spending time outdoors, tending to his beloved plants, listening to music, and grilling out. Throughout his life, he held a special affection for animals, which enriched his experiences and brought warmth to his days.
Steve's greatest pride was his family, particularly his immense love for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He treasured every moment spent with them, creating lasting memories that will be cherished for generations to come. He is survived by his beloved wife, Dottie Freels; his daughters, Jinny Blakley, Joni Freels, and Janis Davids; his brother, Dennis Murphy; along with 12 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Each member of his family will carry forward his spirit and legacy, remembering him as a devoted and loving individual.
Steve was preceded in death by his father, Herbert Manual Freels, and his mother, Helen Arlene Trusty Van Dyke. He also mourned the loss of his son, Jesse Freels, who will be forever remembered in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
The community is invited to honor Steve’s life during the visitation and funeral service scheduled for June 5, 2025, at Newcomer Funeral Home, located at 925 E Hanna Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46227. The visitation will take place from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM, followed by the funeral service at 1:00 PM until 2:00 PM.
Steve's enduring spirit and love for life will be felt by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind not just memories, but an example of how to live with passion, dedication, and love. He will be profoundly missed and forever remembered.
